Death of President of the National Farmers Union, Augusto Mafigo

Maputo, August 5, 2015 - The National Farmers Union of Mozambique
announced the death on the morning of Wednesday, its President, comrade
Augusto Mafigo. The incident occurred in the city of Quelimane, Zambezia
Province, where one peasant leader was in another mission to mobilize

that province. Mafigo, which did not show serious signs of illness days
before leaving for Zambézia, was attacked by strong convulsions and

hospital in Quelimane, where he died at around 8:30 a.m..

Mafigo devoted almost his entire life to the cause of peasants from
their integration into small peasant association in N'pádue, near the
city of Tete. He was elected president of the National Farmers Union in
October 2010, a position he had been performing until the date of his death.

Augusto Mafigo was Vice President of the Provincial Union of Peasants
Tete 2003 to 2006. In 2007 he was elected president of that Provincial

the National Farmers Union.

At 58, Mafigo survived by his wife and eight children. The funebres
